Buganda Region has achieved big from the 11th parliament, after the Nyendo Mukungwe MP elect, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga’s appointment as the new leader of opposition, taking it from the Gulu Woman MP, Betty Aol Ochan.
Hon. Mpuuga who also doubles as the deputy National Unity Platform president in charge of the Central region is set to keep the government of Uganda in check, as his role is provided for in the Administration of Parliament amendment act 2006.
Being entitled to election of a shadow cabinet, some baganda are happy that he appointed Busiro South MP, Medard Lubega Sseggona Akalyamaggwa as the Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, and Joel Ssennyoyi, the Nakawa West MP as the Chairperson of Committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), Betty Nambooze as the chairperson of Government Assurance Committee deputized by Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu, among other positions which are considered big for the representatives from the region.
After Mpuuga’s announcement on the position by the NUP Secretary, David Louis Lubongoya, differet people came up with their opinions on the appointments.
Maureen Mayanja, a self employed citizen of Makindye division commented that they pride in Mpuuga as Baganda, because they look at him as a true leader who can look at issues with an intelligent eye.
“We have hopes in Mpuuga, because of his legendary approach to matters that itch Baganda, and we are hopeful that he will solve many.”
Tom Zikusooka went on his facebook page and commented that, this opposition government is the weakest and most dormant in the history of Uganda, and therefore people should wait and watch.
However, Marti Pius Ssenyunja said that Hon. Mpuuga is fit for that position, and he can therefore do a lot in that office, together with his cabinet.
Sulaiman Ssebuyungo said that this is going to be a compensation for NUP’s stolen victory in January 2021 elections, as well as the small cake share effect in Museveni’s cabinet.
“That was my expectation after elections according to NUP performance” he said.
Prof. Ogenga Latigo, a former leader of opposition cautioned Mpuuga to be careful, that his position is not a ground where he is supposed to play politics.
“An Office of the leader of opposition requires acting in a very mature manner and so Mpuuga must show maturity in his leadership, not only in dealing with opposition but also NRM…Treaty everybody without any negativity, that is what I did when I was LoP and my record speaks for itself” Latigo told Sunday Monitor.
Mpuuga said that in his first 100 days of office, he will create a joint platform that sees to initiate accountability for actions by individuals and groups who are responsible for loss of people’s lives in 18th and 19th over 2020 killings that saw over 55 people dead, especially in Buganda.
