The parents and teachers have expressed their disagreement over delayed opening of nursery schools, something that has come up with devastating effects that have negatively impacted both teachers and parents who take their kids to those learning centers.
As the parents are complaining over aging children while at home, the teachers are raising concerns over struggling to survive, because they don’t work for the government, and their only source of income was the learning centers where they were teaching.
Dramani Lam, a teacher at Yet Happy kids Namasuba says that the second lockdown was a shock to them, because they hadn’t any alternative plans for this period, because even transport was a challenge to them. He says that the government should reopen schools for them to survive and enforce Standard Operating Procedures, because currently he can hardly make a living, because even private coaching was suspended, yet it was his potential bread winner to him during the first lockdown.
“The government should let us teach, because covid-19 is here to stay. Eve if they lock down the country, it remains the same, and therefore they should just open schools and enforce SOPs, such that things move on” He said.
Faith Kyomuhangi, a teacher at Pearl Junior Academy laments that as nursery teachers, their standards of living are getting too low to cope up with the lockdown, and therefore asked the government to reopen the centers to enable them make a living. She said that in the first lockdown, they were patient that anytime soon, the government will consider their services, and also had hopes that covid-19 will be no more, which is not the case.
“Our heads are just slightly above the water levels, but truth be told that we are on the verge of drowning because of what we are going through I this lockdown. Even the money that was promised has never reached us, even the prime minister’s office did not consider us” She added.
Kulthum Nakanjakko, a vendor at Kaleerwe market whose kid goes to Dream Africa Infant school at Kawempe Ttula said that the government should open schools, amid these surging cases and focus on vaccinating people, because their children are adding more wight every now and then, because of staying at home, only to eat and watch movies instead of concentrating on books.
She added that they can’t blame them, because they also don’t know when schooling will resume, therefore the government should only be analytical enough and reopen, because some kids may fear sitting in classes because of their body weight, which may result into them being bullied by fellow pupils
When schools reopened in October after the first lockdown, nursery schools remained closed since the ministry of health guided that nursery kids could not afford wearing masks.
In her address to the nation on 6th February 2021, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni echoed that all nursery schools across the country handling children of 3-6 years should remain closed throughout the Covid-19 season.
The president of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been always urging parents to be a little more patient in most of his addresses on the pandemic, and he has always cautioned them to first ensure safety, and schooling will come in later.

Teachers’ Union says social distancing is largely impractical in most learning institutions in the country.
Although government confirmed that new viriants of the coronavirus, which greatly affect young people are circulating in the country, violation of preventive measures is in the increase and more learning institutions are reporting cases.
Mr kanyesigye Herbert,a third Year student of education at makerere University, decided to remove and pocket his face mask immediately after accessing the University primises through the main gate.
“I have the mask and I can wear it anytime. But wearing it all the time can be abit inconveniencing. The biggest challenge we have is adhering to social distancing because if you are in the class, you will want to talk to your colleagues and sit near them”, Mr kanyesigye Herbert said.
At the University,in a classroom for education students with more than 100 learners, there was no social distancing and the few learners who cared to wear their face masks, most of them were behind chains.
But lack of adherence to covid-19 prevention measures was also witnessed at kampala international university, Nakivubo primary school.
The uganda National Teachers Union ( UNATU) said the vice is widespread in learning institutions. Prof. Rhoda wanyenze, the dean of makerere University school of public health and a member of ministry of health scientific Advisory committee ( SAC) admitted that they are having serious issues where learners deliberately violate the measures but that they are taking action.
“ We enforce the covid-19 prevention measures for our students. If they are not wearing face masks properly,we don’t allow them to come in the school”, Government says.
