Kiwunya Channel Poses Life Threat To Makerere Kikoni Residents

Makerere Kikoni Residents living along Kiwunya channel have once again cried out to the government to desilt and dredge the ever flooding Kiwunya channel, that in February claimed a life of a 12 year old girl.
As the country grapples with the increasing rates of urban floods during rainy seasons, the people living along Kiwunya channel complain of floods which have been attributed to failure of authorities to desilt and dredge the channel that is putting their lives at risk.
Mbabazi Racheal (Maama Isaac) a resident and a shop keeper along the channel says that, the channel is becoming small in width due to sand that covers the channel and the continuance habit of dumping rubbish and other wastes that cause alot of diseases yet medicine is expensive.
“I run a shop and also cook from the here but sometimes I decide not to eat due to the diseases that can contact with my food” she added.
Mr. Ssewajje Joseph, also a resident Makere Kikoni A says that, he is only worried of the young children who plays along this channel that they not only pick dangerous diseases from it but will also continue to die if nothing technical is done.
Nakalema Prossy, student who rentals at Kasubi says that her complaints have never been sorted out ever since she learnt about the death of a young girl who drowned in the channel.
“I pass through this channel from my home to campus in order to reach in time, but in coming back I use another route in fear of falling into it. It is too bushy, the few foot bridges are not of concrete rather mere wood, timber and some metal scraps.” Prossy narrated.
The Lc1 ChairPerson, Makerere Kikoni B cell, Mr. Kalanda Wilson Says that, his office and residents were deprived of the authority and control over the channel and now Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is the one concerned about everything.
“Of course, i am concerned about the channel and I even take the same cause and share the same challenges but my efforts reached their peak. I report every complaint and issue at the KCCA, and the channel is rendered to the council, I am also waiting.” He said.
Our efforts to get comment from both the office of the Mayor and of the Town Clerk Kawempe Division were futile.
We managed to talk to one of the Officials in the office of the Mayor who pleaded with us not to disclose his details said that, the Kiwunya Channel demacates the Boundary between Kawempe and Lubaga Divisions thus both leadership have to partner to rehabilitate it but the Lubaga Division seems not to be contributing despite of Kawempe efforts.
He added that, even the residents have a habit of dropping garbage and encroaching on its banks which has increased silt and reduced width of the channel.
Kiwunya channel runs through a slum area between Kasubi and Makerere Kikoni cells and the major drainage channel that collects all the rain water and sewage from Kasubi, Nakulabye, Makerere Kikoni and Kawala surbubs and empties into the Lubigi swamp.
Such channels have wrought havoc to young children these days causing a number of diseases like Cholera and have continued to claim some people’s lives like, in September, 2020, the Nakivubo channel claimed lives of two people who were recovered at clock tower.
It seems like KCCA has not fully taken it’s part but learning that the public witness fellows who dump rubbish and urinate in it that alone disturbs. So, there must be concerted effort towards the public on preserving the channel for health living.

Covid-19: Drama as Ugandans bury an empty Coffin!

In what appears to be a stage-managed and fictitious twist of events, a group of people dressed in COVID-19 protective gear buried an empty coffin on false pretence that the deceased inside succumbed to SARS-Cov-2.
A report by Hidden Truth Post, an online blog says the burial was being undertaken by frontline workers from Uganda’s Ministry of Health for the incident that happened in Kasese District.
The first video was posted on a YouTube channel called Vic Exclusive on 15th June 2021 and was propagated by other channels on 16th June 2021.
In the video, residents who surrounded the burial place were initially calm. However, the swinging of the casket resembled a lightweight item, prompting bystanders to demand its opening.
A riot police officer can be seen blocking onlookers from making their way close to the casket. Drama ensued and the coffin was opened and to their amusement, the casket was empty.
It is still unclear whether the casket had the body of the COVID-19 victim but kept it somewhere else, or the casket was brought as empty as seen. But a blanket-like object can be seen in the video.
The report doubles another bizarre incident in Mityana town in Uganda where residents were left tongue-tight after finding a casket with a body of a 70-year-old man who died of COVID-19 on the road near Mityana General Hospital.
The man identified as Eriyazaali Kalule, a resident of Bufumba village in Kalangaalo Sub County Mityana District died on 26 June at Entebbe Grade B hospital where he spent one week on COVID-19 treatment.
But the video of the body in question raises the question of what happens to a person who dies of COVID-19 when the relatives are not available.
COVID-19 infection in Uganda is reportedly spiraling out of control and President Yoweri Museveni has mulled the establishment of a facility to produce vaccines in Uganda.
